FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS
Fire Alarm Systems may be as simple or complex depending on the requirements of the building and the Fire Risk Assessment.

DETECTION DEVICES
Fire Alarm systems employ detection devices to sense fire and on activation send a signal to a Control Panel. There are a variety of detection devices depending on the requirement of the area being monitored.
Smoke Detectors
These devices monitor the air for smoke particles or a higher presence of carbon monoxide. Smoke may be detected using either optical sampling with optical detectors or ionization using ionization detectors sampling for a higher percentage of ions in the air.
There are other technological approaches including the monitoring of the air for a higher percentage of carbon monoxide.
Heat Detectors
These detectors measure the rate at which temperature rises and are usually combined with a fixed temperature trigger point.
Fixed Temperature Detectors
The detectors are triggered solely by a specific temperature of which there are several fixed temperatures devices that can be specified.
Flame Detectors
These devices detect the presence of flames
Manual Call Points
These are also known as Break Glass points and are used by the observer of a fire to activate the fire alarm to advise the other occupants of a fire.
CONTROL PANELS
Control Panels receive the signal from the detection devices and depending on the panel's programming, produce an output.
There are two types of control panel, the addressable and non-addressable.
Conventional
These panels tend to be used in the smaller installation and where the programming is more basic. The configuration is that a single cable leaves the panel and connects a number of detection devices which are linked on the same zone for area identification in the event of a fire.
Addressable
These panels are designed for a loop configuration and are used in the larger installation and especially where the programming is more complex.
